Human beings love change. In fact, we’re wired for it! We shop for the latest fashions and styles even when our closets are overflowing. We make regular appointments at the hair salon and barber shops for the latest hairstyles and colors. We certainly can’t resist the latest cell phone on the market and even buy new furniture when the old comfortable couch would suffice. We hope that the interview for that new higher paying job is successful so we can then afford to buy that new car we’ve seen advertised. We even track the changes in the weather hour by hour on our weather apps, wishing that the summer’s sweltering heat quickly gives way to the coolness of fall, or that the winter’s cold blast is quickly replaced with the warmer days of spring! It’s only natural to hope for change. The 18th-century English poet Alexander Pope says it best, “Hope springs eternal in the human breast”. It is an inherent part of our human nature to look forward to what we think will be a better future, regardless of our current situation. Sometimes though, it can be just as important not to look so far forward, but to live in the moment and enjoy the things that life and Mother Nature has to offer in the here and now.
