From Garden to Table: Our Favorite Seasonal Ingredients

farm-to-table garden at stuart hill

Nothing is healthier than picking vegetables, fruits and herbs directly from the garden and using them to prepare our favorite Garden Fresh Meals at Stuart Hill Bed and Breakfast!

Thomas Jefferson, the writer of the Declaration of Independence and the 3rd President of new nation was an avid horticulturalist and wrote a great deal about agriculture.  He said, “Farming is our wisest pursuit because it will, in the end, contribute the most to real wealth, good morale and happiness.”

So why do we serve Farm to Table ingredients in our Southern Breakfast Recipes? It may be because raising the organic produce offers many environmental benefits such as: a reduction in harmful chemicals, pesticides and in the carbon footprint.  It may be because these practices support sustainable agriculture, soil health and biodiversity, which helps preserve the environment for the future of our wonderful community.  But most importantly, without question, we get the most joy from seeing the look of gratitude and amazement on the faces of our guests as they are served and begin feasting upon a fabulous breakfast complete with locally grown ingredients straight from our garden! That gives any innkeeper or master gardener a great deal of satisfaction and is an inspiration to continue to work the soil year-round.

So, what do we serve for breakfast you might ask? At Stuart Hill Bed and Breakfast, we appreciate the value of whole foods and make every effort to use our nutrient-rich leafy greens such as kale, collards, spinach or even Swiss chard as delicious ingredients in the dishes we prepare. They go well with a variety of egg recipes from Omelets to Quiche dishes, Frittatas and Smoothies and our homegrown produce which, depending on the season, would include fruits such as blueberries, apples, peaches and grapes, nuts from our black walnut trees, and vegetables such as yellow squash, tomatoes, peppers, carrots, beets, winter squash or potatoes of all colors and varieties and even cabbage. These garden delights beautifully accent any entrée along with a variety of flavorful additions including freshly picked herbs such as Italian oregano, sweet basil, fennel, garlic, chives, sage or parsley to please any palate. In season, we may even add a lovely fresh garnish of edible flowers!  Whatever our gardens have to offer, that is what we serve!

Thomas Jefferson simply put it for us, “The earth is given as a common stock for man to labor and live on.”
